IMU and IMU Controller

The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) technology is an airborne GPS-based tool that allows for post-flight data processing that provides an absolute orientation solution without the time and labor intensive  aerial triangulation process.  A long-standing challenge to the timely completion of aerial mapping projects is the need to complete the traditional aerial triangulation process.  Via use of the IMU technology and its timely data post-processing capability, aerial mapping projects can now be completed in substantially less time.

In order to validate the resulting IMU solution, Optimal Geomatic performs a number of QC checks, including validation via sample-based aerial triangulation. In keeping with Optimal Geomatic's endeavors to give our clients a quality product in the shortest turnaround possible, we have added IMUs (Inertial Measuring Units) to our aircraft fitted with the LH Systems RC-30 precision Aerial Cameras.

The high precision RC-30 aerial cameras are fitted with 6" focal length lenses and Forward Motion Compensation (FMC). An IMU attaches to the top of the camera and automatically adjusts for the tip and tilt of the aircraft during an aerial photo mission. With the an IMU’s attached to the RC-30 camera to make these immediate adjustments, a lengthy step is eliminated in the production process giving Optimal Geomatic’s clients a quality product on an accelerated basis.
